Characteristics

Compactly tufted strong perennials. Culms 40–140 cm high, branched, terete; internodes smooth, glabrous, glaucous. Leaves: ligule to 0.3 mm long; blade flat, coiled at maturity, to 20 cm long, to 3 mm wide. Inflorescences 10–45 cm long, 5–20 cm wide, ±open; branches not appressed, to 8 cm long, naked at base. Glumes inverse or subequal, entire, acute, glabrous; lower glume 9–19 mm long, 1 (rarely sub 3)-nerved; upper glume 8–19 mm long, 1-nerved. Lemma 7–12 mm long, shorter than both glumes, involute with an overlapping margin, smooth, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; groove smooth; column absent; awns slightly but visibly unequal, gently curved; median awn 13–37 mm long; lateral awns 10–31 mm long. Anthers to 1.5 mm long, terete (at the apex) or flattened (at the base). Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., 5–8.5 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
