Characteristics

Loosely tufted slender to robust perennials. Culms 25–45 cm high, slender, simply branched; internodes usually smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule 0.5–1 mm long; blade conduplicate, to 12 cm long, to 1.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 5–8 cm long, 3–6 cm wide, ±open; branches not appressed, to 2.5 cm long, naked at base. Glumes normal, acute, entire, aristulate, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 5–8 mm long; upper glume 7–14 mm long. Lemma 8–14 mm long, subequal to upper glume, convolute, scabrous only on margin (apically) or smooth, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 11–25 mm long; median awn gently curved. Caryopsis terete, to 6.5 mm long, ±twice embryo length.
