Characteristics

Compactly tufted very robust perennials. Culms to 200 cm high, strongly branched (fasciculate), robust and woody; internodes smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.2 mm long; blade flat or conduplicate, to 30 cm long, to 4 mm wide. Inflorescences 7–30 cm long, 0.5–5 cm wide, loosely contracted or ±open. Glumes normal, entire, acute, 1-nerved, scabrous or scaberulous, glabrous; lower glume 5–8 mm long; upper glume 7–9 mm long. Lemma 8–12 mm long, subequal to upper glume, convolute, scabrous, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns slightly but visibly unequal; median awn 14–23 mm long, straight or gently curved; lateral awns 11–20 mm long. Caryopsis terete, to 6 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
