Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms 50–80 cm high, branched, terete or compressed (near base); internodes scaberulous; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule 0.5–1 mm long; blade flat or conduplicate, to 18 cm long, to 3 mm wide. Inflorescences 9.5–20 cm long, 3–6 cm wide, densely congested and spicate; branches tightly appressed, to 1.7 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, notched or entire, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 5–8 mm long, aristulate or awned; upper glume 6–9.5 mm long, aristulate. Lemma 5–8 mm long, subequal to lower glume, convolute, scaberulous at apex, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column poorly developed, 1–5 mm long; awns subequal, 15–25 mm long. Caryopsis terete, 4–6.5 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
