Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms 60–100 cm high, sparsely branched, terete or compressed; internodes smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.5 mm long; blade flat or conduplicate, sometimes flexuose at maturity, to 30 cm long, to 2.3 mm wide. Inflorescences 17–24 cm long, 3–7 cm wide, ±open; branches loosely appressed, to 10 cm long, naked at base. Glumes normal, acute, notched or entire, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 6–11 mm long, aristulate or awned; upper glume 7–15 mm long. Lemma 5–9.5 mm long, shorter than both glumes, convolute, tuberculate apically, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column distinct or poorly developed; awns slightly but visibly unequal, 10–25 mm long, straight. Caryopsis terete, 5–8 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
