Characteristics

Densely caespitose perennial; culms 1–2 m. high, the internodes glabrous.. Leaf-blades narrow, involute, up to 50 cm. long and 5 mm. wide, with a flake of wool at the auricles; sheaths glabrous or sometimes woolly.. Panicle large, effuse, up to 80 cm. long, lax and often nodding.. Spikelets light brown or purplish; glumes unequal; lower glume lanceolate, 5–7 mm. long; upper glume linear-lanceolate, 10–15 mm. long; lemma terete, 7–9 mm. long, glabrous, mottled with purple, articulated at the apex; callus 1–2 mm. long, broadly linear, 2-toothed or emarginate at the tip; column 5–15(–18) mm. long; awns subequal, up to 5 cm. long.
More
Perennial, densely tufted, up to 2 m high. Leaf blades up to 650 mm long, up to 5 mm wide, leaves flexible, some leaf auricles with long woolly hairs. Lower culm internodes glabrous or pubescent to woolly-hairy. Spikelets 35-50 mm long (including awns). Inflorescence oblong to broadly oblong, symmetrical, large, up to 800 mm long and over 200 mm wide, much-branched; lower glume less than two-thirds the length of the upper; lemma articulation between apex of lemma and base of column; column 8-20 mm long; awns 3, subequal; callus tip naked, deeply bifid.
Densely tufted perennial to 2000 mm high; lower culm internodes glabrous or pubescent to woolly-hairy. Leaf blade to 650 x to 5 mm, flexible; some leaf auricles with long woolly hairs. Inflorescence large, to 800 mm long and over 200 mm wide, oblong to broadly oblong, symmetrical; much branched. Spikelet 35-50 mm long (including awns); lower glume less than 2/3 the length of upper glume, awnless; lemma articulation between lemma apex and column base; column 8-20 mm long; awns three, subequal; callus apex naked, deeply bifid; anther 5.5-6.0 mm long.
Perennial; up to 2 m high; densely tufted. Culms with lower internodes glabrous or pubescent to woolly hairy. Leaf blades up to 650 x 5 mm; leaves flexible; some leaf auricles with long woolly hairs. Flowers: panicle oblong to broadly oblong; symmetrical; large; up to 800 mm long; > 200 mm wide; much branched; spikelets 35-50 mm long (including awns); lower glume < 2/3 length of upper; lemma articulation between apex of lemma and base of column; column 8-20 mm long; awns 3; subequal; callus apex naked; deeply bifid.
Lemma 7-9 mm. long, mottled with purple, smooth or slightly punctulate in the lower part, scaberulous towards the tip; callus 1·5-2 mm. long, barbate, distinctly 2-fid; column 5-20 mm. long, slender, strongly twisted, scabrous or nearly glabrous; awns up to 5 cm. long, subequal; articulation between the apex of the lemma and the base of the column.
Glumes unequal, 1-nerved, glabrous; the inferior 5-7 mm. long, obtuse or emarginate, slightly ciliate upwards along the margins; the superior 10-15 mm. long, 2-fid at the apex.
Panicle up to 80 cm. long and over 20 cm. wide, effuse, very lax, often nodding, many-flowered, with smooth axis; branches 2-3-nate with filiform branchlets.
Lower leaf-sheath glabrous or woolly, afterwards becoming glabrous, the upper ones glabrous, smooth, somewhat loose.
Culms erect, simple or slightly branched, glabrous, 2-3-noded; nodes often dark-coloured, glabrous.
Ligule a short-citiate rim; auricles barbate, with a tuft of woolly hairs; collar glabrous.
Leaf-laminae up to 50 x 0·5 cm., involute, scabrous above, glabrous, smooth beneath.
Perennial, up to 2 m. high, very robust, densely caespitose.
Spikelets yellowish, yellowish-brown or tinged with purple.
