Lemma 7-8.5 mm. long, minutely punctulate; callus 2-2.5 mm. long, very acute, elongate, short-barbate; column 16-27 mm. long, scabrous, twisted; awns 2.8-6 cm. long, subequal, scabrous, more or less spreading; articulation between the apex of the lemma and the base of the column.
Glumes very unequal, narrowly lanceolate, usually 1-nerved, scabrid on the keel, finely scaberulous towards the apex, shortly awned; the inferior 8-10 mm. long; the superior 12.5-22 mm. long.
Culms erect, robust, simple or rarely branched in the upper part, densely lanate-tomentose or densely woolly, especially towards the base, 3-7-noded; nodes glabrous, smooth.
Panicle up to 20 cm. long, shortly exserted, narrow, very dense and almost spiciform; axis densely lanate; branches numerous, very short, appressed, scabrid.
Ligule a shortly pubescent or ciliate rim; auricles with a tuft of woolly hairs; collar glabrous or minutely pubescent.
Leaf-laminae up to 30 x 0.3 cm., involute, nearly filiform, scaberulous above, glabrous, smooth beneath.
Leaf-sheaths lanate-tomentose to glabrous, usually tight.
Perennial, up to 90 cm. high, densely caespitose.
Spikelets nearly sessile, pallid or purplish.
