Compactly tufted perennials. Culms 50–90 cm high, branched, terete or compressed; internodes smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 1 mm long; blade flat or conduplicate, not coiled or flexuose at maturity, to 19 cm long, to 2 mm wide. Inflorescences 17–30 cm long, 1–4 cm wide, loosely contracted; branches loosely appressed, 2.5–10 cm long, bearing spikelets from base or naked at base. Glumes subequal or normal, 8–12 mm long, shortly awned, 1-nerved, glabrous, scabrous or scaberulous or scabrous on keel; lower glume acute, entire; upper glume obtuse or acute, notched or entire. Lemma 7.5–11 mm long, slightly shorter than or subequal to both glumes, involute, tuberculate apically, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; groove tuberculate; column absent; awns slightly but visibly unequal, straight or gently curved; median awn 17–30 mm long; lateral awns 15–25 mm long, terete or flattened. Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., 7–9 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
