Characteristics

Loosely tufted perennials. Culms 25–40 cm high, branched, terete or compressed; internodes smooth, hairy (with slight reflexed pubescence at base). Leaves: ligule to 0.5 mm long; blade flat, to 25 cm long, to 3 mm wide. Inflorescences 7–15 cm long, 6–14 cm wide, ±open; branches not appressed, to 7 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, acute, entire, 1-nerved, scabrous or scaberulous, glabrous; lower glume 6–10 mm long, aristulate; upper glume 13–21 mm long, awned. Lemma 11–14 mm long, intermediate in length between glumes, convolute, tuberculate-spiny, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 23–40 mm long; median awn gently curved. Caryopsis terete or biconvex, 6–10 mm long, ±twice embryo length.
