Characteristics

Compactly tufted, short-lived perennials. Culms 20–13 mm long, acute, glabrous or hairy (rarely pilose); lower glume entire, 3 (sub 5)-nerved; upper glume notched, 1-nerved. Lemma 7–12 mm long, subequal to both glumes, involute, smooth or muriculate apically, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; groove smooth; column distinct, 4–9 mm long, scaberulous; median awn 6–20 mm long; lateral awns extremely short or absent, 0–4 mm long, terete, straight. Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., 4.8–8 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
