Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms 50–120 cm high, branched to (rarely) strongly branched, terete; internodes scaberulous. Leaves: ligule 0.5–1 mm long; blade flat or conduplicate, to 18 cm long, to 3 mm wide. Inflorescences 16–36 cm long, 1.5–3 cm wide, densely congested and spicate; branches tightly appressed, 2–4 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, acute, notched or entire, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 7–10 mm long, aristulate or awned; upper glume 8–12 mm long, aristulate. Lemma 7–10 mm long, subequal to lower glume, convolute, scabrous apically (scabrid hairs long and thin), without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 12–26 mm long, straight. Caryopsis terete, 6–8 mm long, ±twice embryo length
