Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms to 40 cm high, branched, terete; internodes smooth, glabrous, glaucous; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.5 mm long; blades mostly arranged basally, involute, setaceous, not coiled or flexuose at maturity, to 25 cm long, to 0.75 mm wide. Inflorescences 6–11 cm long, to 0.3 cm wide, loosely contracted; branches tightly appressed, to 2 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes subequal, entire, awnless, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume caducous, 5.5–6 mm long, acute to acuminate; upper glume 6–7 mm long, acute. Lemma 5.5–6 mm long, subequal to both glumes, convolute, smooth, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; median awn gently curved, 3.5–4 mm long; lateral awns extremely short, to 1 mm long, terete. Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., to 4.5 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
