Characteristics

Densely caespitose perennial; culms 40–120 cm. high, the internodes, or at least the lower, pubescent to woolly.. Leaf-blades linear, up to 40 cm. long and 4 mm. wide, expanded or rolled, with a flake of wool at the auricles; lower sheaths woolly or glabrescent.. Panicle pyramidal, effuse, up to 30 cm. long.. Spikelets light brown or pallid; glumes unequal; lower glume lanceolate, 4.5–7 mm. long, obtuse; upper glume narrowly lanceolate, 9–13 mm. long; lemma terete, 7–11 mm. long, glabrous, often purple mottled, articulated at the apex; callus 1 mm. long, broadly linear, 2-toothed or emarginate; column 2–7 mm. long; central awn 2–3.5 cm. long, the laterals a little shorter.
More
Densely tufted perennial, up to 850 mm high; lower culm internodes pubescent to woolly-hairy, upper internodes pubescent to glabrous. Leaf blade up to 240 x 4 mm; ligule a dense fringe of hairs. Inflorescence a narrowly oblong to narrowly elliptic, usually asymmetric panicle, up to 200 x 120 mm. Spikelet 30-50 mm long (including awns), disarticulating above glumes; lower glume up to 2/3 length of upper glume, awn or mucro absent. Floret 1; lemma articulation between lemma apex and base of column; column 5-7 mm long; awns 3, laterals well developed, glabrous; callus tip naked, distinctly bifid. Flowering time sporadic, but mostly Nov.-May.

Spikelets 30-50 mm long (including awns). Inflorescence narrowly oblong to narrowly elliptic, usually asymmetric, up to 200 mm long and 120 mm wide; lower glume up to two-thirds the length of the upper, awn or mucro absent; lemma articulation between lemma apex and base of column; column 5-7 mm long; awns 3, laterals well developed; callus tip naked, distinctly bifid.

Perennial; up to 0.85 m high; densely tufted. Culms with lower internodes pubescent to woolly hairy; upper internodes pubescent to glabrous. Leaf blades up to 240 x 4 mm. Flowers: panicle open; narrowly oblong to narrowly elliptic; usually asymmetric; up to 200 x 120 mm; spikelets 30-50 mm long (including awns); lower glume up to 2/3 length of upper; awn or mucro absent; lemma articulation between lemma apex and base of column; column 5-7 mm long; awns 3; laterals well developed; callus apex naked; distinctly bifid.
Lemma 7-11 mm. long, glabrous, often mottled with purple; callus 1-1·5 mm. long, 2-fid, barbate; column 2-7 mm. long, strongly twisted; awns unequal; the central 20-35 mm. long, the lateral ones shorter; articulation between the apex of the lemma and the base of the column.
Perennial, up to 0.85 m tall; lower internodes of culms woolly hairy. Leaves linear; ligule a fringe of hairs. Spikelets 30-50 mm long (including awns), 1-flowered; glumes unequal; lemma 3-awned, column present, articulation between lemma apex and column base.
Glumes unequal, firm, 1-nerved, glabrous; the inferior 4·5-7 mm. long, lanceolate, rounded at the apex; the superior 9-13 mm. long, narrowly lanceolate, somewhat denticulate along the margins towards the apex, slightly emarginate.
Panicle up to 20 x 12 cm., pyramidal, effuse, open or laxly contracted; axis glabrous or with scattered white hairs, sometimes barbate in the lower axils, with fine, suberect or somewhat spreading scabrous branches.
Culms rigid, simple, sometimes branched from the base or from the nodes, pubescent or woolly in the lower part, often glabrous upwards, 3-4-noded; nodes glabrous.
Leaf-laminae up to 24 x 0·4 cm., flat at the base, involute in the upper part, shortly pubescent or somewhat villous above, glabrous beneath.
Lower leaf-sheaths broad and papery, straw-coloured, lanate on the back and along the margins, soon becoming glabrous.
Ligule a very shortly ciliate rim; auricles with a tuft of woolly hairs.
Perennial, up to 85 cm. high, robust, densely caespitose.
