Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms to 45 cm high, branched, terete; internodes smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule 0.3–0.7 mm long; blade involute, setaceous, flexuose at maturity, to 16 cm long, to 0.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 12–15 cm long, 3–5 cm wide, ±open. Glumes normal, acute, entire, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 8–9 mm long, awned; upper glume 13–14 mm long, aristulate. Lemma 10–11 mm long, longer than lower glume, convolute (rarely appearing involute), smooth or scabrous apically, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 30–37 mm long, gently curved. Caryopsis not seen.
