Characteristics

Lemma 10·5-11 mm. long, exserted from the glumes, keeled, often mottled with purple, glabrous in the lower part, scaberulous on the keel and lateral nerves towards the apex; callus 0·5 mm. long, short-barbate, with a minute, obtuse, glabrous tip; column absent; awns unequal, scabrous, the central 1·1-1·6 cm. long, the lateral ones 0·6-1·3 cm. long; articulation absent.

Panicle 20-22 cm. long, lax, effuse; axis slightly scaberulous; branches up to 6 cm. long (excluding spikelets), simple or 2-nate, naked for most of their length, scaberulous, with a dark coloured glandular patch in the axils, ± spreading or the lower ones sometimes reflexed, bearing 1-3 spikelets towards the ends.
Glumes unequal, the lower longer than the upper, hyaline-membranous, 1-nerved, keeled, slightly scaberulous on the keel, otherwise glabrous; the inferior 7-9 mm. long, acute; the superior 6-7·5 mm. long, erose and obtuse at the apex.
Leaf-laminae up to 22 x 0·1-0·15 cm., convolute, minutely hirtellous above, glabrous, smooth beneath.
Culms erect, slender, simple or branched, glabrous, smooth, 3-4-noded; nodes glabrous.
Leaf-sheath glabrous, slightly keeled, tinged with purple towards the base.
Ligule a short ciliate rim; auricles short-ciliate; collar glabrous.
Spikelets pallid or tinged with purple.
