Fls unisexual, axillary, in racemes to solitary, 4-5-merous; sepals valvate, petals us. lobed or toothed; disk thickened. Stamens ∞ or 4-5, inserted on disk, anthers opening by apical slits. Ovary 2-4-celled, ovules 2 per cell, styles subulate. Fr. a berry. Embryo straight. Shrubs or trees with opp. lvs. Perhaps 12 spp. of Australia, New Hebrides, South America. The N.Z. spp. endemic.
