Annual or perennial herbs with short rhizomes or fibrous roots or tubers. Leaves basal, linear, 3-angled or tubular. Scape simple or branched, bracteate; inflorescence a raceme or panicle. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, pedicellate; pedicels articulate. Perianth segments 6, equal, free or ±connate at base, spreading above, 1-nerved. Stamens 6; anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing by slits, introrse. Ovary superior, trilocular; ovules 2 per locule; placentation axile; style simple with trilobed stigma. Fruit a loculicidal capsule. Seeds triquetrous, black, matt.
