Characteristics

Culms 7–68 cm high. Leaves with auricles 0.2–0.4 mm long; ligule 0.1–0.5 mm long, hyaline to membranous, obtuse to truncate; blade 3.8–5.3 (–13) cm long, 1.75–4 mm wide, predominantly flat to slightly involute, acute to acuminate, adaxially sparsely to densely scabrous to pilose (sometimes only toward apex). Raceme 31–38.5 cm long, with 5–10 strongly spreading spikelets; peduncle pubescent to pilose with retrorse hairs. Spikelets 10–11 mm long. Glumes not diverging from spikelet; lower glume narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic, 4.75–6.5 mm long, muticous, chartaceous to cartilaginous, 5 or 6 (–7)-nerved. Bisexual florets: lemma narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic, 6.25–7 mm long, long-acuminate, muticous, dorsally rounded or apically keeled, with (7–) 8–9 scabrous nerves and intercostal regions glabrous or papillose to scabrous; palea with nerves scabrous; anthers 2.25–3 mm long.
