Characteristics

Perennials, caespitose, bisexual. Leaves auriculate; ligule an eciliate membrane. Inflorescence a spike-like raceme, composed of somewhat spreading bisexual spikelets; rachis not disarticulating, hollowed. Spikelets solitary, subsessile to shortly pedicellate, imbricate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes and between florets, with 5–7 bisexual florets; rachilla extension with sterile florets. Glumes lateral to rachis, ±equal, fused slightly at base, awnless, slightly keeled; lower glume 3–5 (–7)-nerved; upper glume 5–7-nerved. Bisexual florets: lemma muticous to 1-awned, chartaceous to cartilaginous, 5 or 7 (–9)-nerved; stamens 3; ovary hairy. Caryopsis small, 3–3.5 mm long, not grooved; hilum long-linear.
