Characteristics

Flowering culms 40–100 cm high, 4–7-noded. Leaves: ligule 0.4–0.9 mm long; blade mostly flat, 6–16 cm long, 1.5–3 mm wide. Inflorescence branches 2–3, 6–9 (–15) cm long. Spikelets sessile. Glumes: lower glume linear to oblong, 4–6 mm long; upper glume elliptic to lanceolate, 3–5 (–6.5) mm long. Basal lemma broadly elliptic or obovate, 2.3–3.4 mm long, entire or emarginate, cartilaginous; awn median, ±as long as lemma body, 1.5–3 mm long, straight; bearded on the upper lateral nerves, silky pubescent on the lower three-quarters of midnerve and in lines just inside each lateral nerve for lower 1/4–1/3 of lemma. Palea obovate, ±equal to lemma body, with ciliolate keels. Grain elliptic to obovate, 1.1–1.6 mm long, 0.6–1 mm wide. Incomplete floret appressed to bisexual floret; lemma awnless.
