Perennial; culms 35-90 cm. high, rarely more than 1 m., erect, branching; sheaths compressed, keeled, glabrous, the margins sometimes ciliate; ligule ciliate, about 0.5 mm. long; blades 4-15 cm. long, 3-9 mm. wide, spreading, firm, flat or drying involute toward the tip, glabrous, the margins scabrous, sometimes sparsely ciliate toward the rounded base; racemes 2-15, slender, ascending, crowded on a short hairy axis; rachis 0.4-0.7 mm. wide, conspicuously papillose-ciliate with stiff golden-yellow or brown hairs, bearing below each spikelet a tuft of similar hairs; spikelets 1.3 mm. long, glabrous or sparsely appressed-hispid.
