Characteristics

Perennial herb or subshrub, up to 0.3 m high. Stems not winged. Leaves alternate, scattered along stem, lower leaves petiolate, upper sessile; blade linear-oblong or narrowly obovate in outline, 30-80 mm long, pinnatifid, rachis 3-10(-15) mm wide, segments triangular, spicate, 5-10(-15) mm long, margins revolute, spinulose-ciliate, upper surface usually with straw-coloured bristles, lower surface tomentose, rarely glabrescent; upper leaves somewhat smaller, base semi-amplexicaul. Heads discoid, up to 40 mm in diameter, several together, terminal and axillary, pedunculate. Involucral bracts connate at base, linear-triangular, 8-15(-20) x (2-)3-5 mm, apex and margins spiny. Flowers: ray florets absent; disc florets yellow; Oct.-Apr. Fruit with cypsela turbinate, glabrous or rarely minutely pubescent, 2-3 mm long. Pappus of scales, ± biseriate, 0.8-1.5 mm long, acute to subobtuse.

Capitula involucri squamis expansis 1.5-3(-4) cm diam. Involucri squamae lanceolati-triangulatae, mediae 8-15(-20) mm longae ,(2-)3-5 mm latae, ceterae breviores. Setae receptaculi 2-3 mm longae. Pappi squamae 0.8-1.5 mm longae.
