Characteristics

Rhizome creeping; erect trunk to 50 (-150) cm tall. Fronds dimorphic, 45-100 (-150) cm long, 4-30 cm wide. Stipe 12-60 cm long, purplish black, brown to reddish brown; basal scales linear-lanceolate, acuminate, entire, brown to reddish brown or bicolorous; scale scars present above. Lamina ovate to lanceolate, pinnate, with 6-37 pairs of pinnae; rachis and costae stramineous or ±concolorous with stipe; scales reddish brown (sometimes bicolorous and often with dentate bases); fine scale and hair material often persistent in grooves; sterile pinnae oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, auriculate-hastate (especially basiscopically), 7-25 cm long, 8-20 mm wide, shortly stalked at base of lamina, adnate towards apex; margins serrate; basal pinnae gradually reduced and more widely spaced; fertile pinnae 7-17 cm long, 3-5 mm wide. Spores 53 × 36 µm; perine costate-alate to saccate, scaberulous; exine smooth, scaberulous or minutely rugulose.
