Characteristics

Rhizome shortly erect to creeping. Fronds dimorphic, 9-140 cm long, 3-26 cm or more wide. Stipe 5-65 cm long, purplish black at base, stramineous above; scales linear to lanceolate, subulate to acuminate, entire to finely dentate, brown to reddish brown to bicolorous. Lamina lanceolate, ovate to deltoid, pinnate, with 2-17 pairs of pinnae; rachis and costae stramineous to pale pinkish brown, sometimes darker; scales variable in shape, acuminate, dentate, often with irregular, marginal outgrowths (especially the narrower scales), stramineous to dark red-brown sometimes bicolorous; lanuginose hairs sometimes present; sterile pinnae oblong-lanceolate, 1.5-15 cm long, 9-34 mm wide, shortly stalked at base of lamina, becoming adnate basiscopically towards apex; margins serrate to crenate; basal pinnae slightly reduced; fertile pinnae narrowly linear. Spores 48 × 34 µm; perine alate-costate; exine scaberulous to vermiculate.
