Calyx closed in bud, truncate or lobed. Petals 5, tomentellous outside. Stamens many, adnate to the petals at their base, either in 2 whorls with the outer whorl of 5 epipetalous bundles and the inner whorl of 5 alternipetalous pairs, or in 5 epipetalous bundles; stamens united at their base into a short tube; anthers oblong or reniform. Ovary 5-locular, with numerous ovules; stigma 4-5-lobed or entire. Fruit a ± woody capsule, loculicidally 5-valved, with a persistent axis. Seeds many, pyriform or angular, covered in the woolly indumentum of the endocarp; endosperm none; cotyledons plicate.
