Characteristics

Leaves 1 or 2 pairs on upper half to three-quarters of stem, small, 3–7 mm. long, up to 1 mm. wide, linear, those on lower part of stem (7)15–34 x 3–6.5(10) mm., opposite or nearly so, remote with internodes up to 7 cm. or more long, basal leaves crowded, internodes less than 1 cm. long, lamina narrowly obovate to broadly ovate, obtuse, rounded apex, narrowed at base, entire to crenate-dentate with 1–4 irregularly positioned teeth, pilose, scabrid.

Corolla pale blue, violet to purple or white; tube 6–8 mm. long, slender, hairy without, throat pilose; limb 4.5–6 mm. in diam.; lobes 2–3 mm. long, c. 1.5 mm. wide, oblong-obovate to obovate, entire.
Annual herbs, 35–65 cm. tall, erect; stem very slender, simple or branched within the lower half or immediately below inflorescence, terete, glabrous above becoming pilose below in area of leaves.
Calyx 4.5–5.5 mm. long, 10-nerved, 5-lobed, pubescent; lobes 1–1.75 mm. long, lanceolate-subulate.
Spikes 7–12 x 5–8 mm., compact becoming lax after flowering, up to 70 mm. long in fruit.
Bracts 3–3.5(4) x 1.5 mm., ovate, acuminate, pubescent, white ciliate.
Capsule 4–5.25 x 1.5–2.5 mm., cylindric-ovoid, shortly rostrate.
Bracteoles 3(4) mm. long, narrowly linear-lanceolate.
