Characteristics

Corolla cream, yellow, pink to mauve; tube often pale brown, 8–9 mm. long, glabrous, cylindrical, becoming arcuate after anthesis; limb 2.8–4.2 mm. in diam.; lobes 1.5–2.8 x 0.4–0.8 mm., lanceolate-oblong, obtuse, involute, appearing somewhat fleshy when dry, subequal.

Leaves opposite or alternate frequently with smaller leaves or short branches arising in axils, 30–40(55) x 0.5–1(2.25) mm., very slender to almost filamentous, mostly revolute, sparsely short-hispid, strict or occasionally irregularly contorted when dry, 1-nerved.
Annual herb 35–45 cm. tall, erect; stems slender, much branched, glabrous to subglabrous above, sparsely minutely pubescent below, branches ascending, leafy throughout.
Spikes up to 15 cm. long, slender, cylindrical; flowers laxly arranged, opposite or alternate, ascending, somewhat appressed to axis.
Calyx (5.5)6.8–8.5 mm. long, 5-lobed, 5-nerved, glabrous; lobes (0.5)1–1.8(2) mm. long, triangular, acute or obtuse, short-ciliate.
Capsule 9–10 x c. 1 mm., slender, linear-elliptic in outline tapering to acute, rostrate apex.
Bracts (2)3–4(7) x c. 1 mm., lanceolate, glabrous except for short-ciliate margin and midrib.
Bracteoles 1.6–2.8(4.3) mm. long, linear, ciliate.
