Slender, annual, semiparasitic herb, up to 200 mm tall. Stem and branches filiform. Leaves opposite, linear. Spikes glabrous except for ciliolate bracts. Flowers purplish or blue.
Bracts c. 2.5 x 1.5 mm., ovate, acute or acuminate, occasionally minutely toothed towards apex, glabrous, margin very minutely hispid.
Calyx 4 mm. long, 4-lobed, slightly bipartite, glabrous, obscurely 8-nerved; lobes 1 x 0.5 mm., ovate, obtuse to acuminate.
Leaves 8–30 mm. long, up to 1 mm. wide, opposite or subopposite, linear, entire, acute, glabrous to sparsely scabrid.
Annual herbs, 8–30 cm. tall, erect, slender; stems simple or branched, glabrous, terete, almost filiform.
Spikes 3–15(25) x 2–5 mm., densely compacted, lowest flowers becoming more remote at fruiting.
Capsule c. 3 x 1.75 mm., slightly compressed ellipsoid-cylindrical, emarginate, glabrous.
Bracteoles 2 x 0.5 mm., linear, glabrous, margin minutely hispid.
