Characteristics

Calyx (5)7–8.5 mm. long, 5-lobed, prominently 10-nerved, hispid-scabrid especially on nerves; lobes 1.5–2.75 mm. long, ovate or ovate-lanceolate to linear-triangular, hispid-ciliate.

Inflorescence spicate (8)15–38 x 8–35 mm., terminal, globose, hemispheric to cylindric, densely compactly flowered, not quadrangular, usually subtended by numerous upper leaves.
Annual herb, (7)20–60(180) cm. tall, erect, drying green or brown, not black; stems simple or less frequently branched above, scabrid, moderately to densely leafy throughout.
Corolla blue to purple; tube to about 10mm. long, glabrous or minutely glandular without, throat pilose; lobes to 4.5 x 4 mm., broadly obovate, subequal.
Leaves 12.5–65 x 1.5–13 mm., opposite or alternate, ovate-elliptic to oblong, obtuse, shortly mucronate or not, entire, 3(5)-nerved, hispid-scabrid.
Bracts (5.5)7.5–9 x (1.5)2–3 mm., lanceolate, ovate or elliptic-lanceolate, keeled, acuminate, pilose-hispid to subglabrous, ciliate.
Bracteoles (4.5)6–8 x 0.5 mm., linear to linear-lanceolate, hispid to pilose.
Capsule 4.25–5 x 2–2.5 mm., ovoid-ellipsoid, glabrous.
