Characteristics

Corolla blue to occasionally purple, or white; tube 6(8) mm. long, slender, straight, cylindric, very sparsely pilose or pubescent without, sometimes appearing glabrous; limb 2.5–4 mm. in diam.; lobes 1.5–2(3) x 1.5–2 mm., obovate or obovate-cuneate.

Leaves 20–65(90) x (3)6–25(42) mm., opposite, oblong-obtuse below, lanceolate-acute above, narrowing at base, 3–5-nerved, entire or remotely toothed, sparsely appressed pubescent above, hispid with short hairs beneath (especially on major nerves).
Annual herb, 40–60 cm. or more tall, stout, erect; stems branched with branches opposite, mostly above, erect-spreading, obscurely quadrangular, markedly leafy, white long subappressed-hispid, to subglabrous in parts.
Calyx 5.5–7 mm. long, subquadrangular, 4-lobed, 4-nerved, hispid mainly on nerves, split on upper and lower side to c. 2.5 mm.; lobes c. 1.5 mm. long, narrowly deltate acute.
Bracts varied, lowest leaf-like to c. 25 mm. long, lanceolate, upper 5–8 x 3–4 mm., broadly ovate to circular, apex acute to acuminate, occasionally keeled at apex, hispid.
Inflorescence of compact heads of spikes, 10–30 x 10–22 mm., corymbosely arranged, quadrangular, markedly so in fruit.
Bracteoles 4–5 x 0.6–1 mm., distinctly keeled, hispid.
Capsule c. 4.5 mm. long, ovoid, shortly rostrate.
