Corolla white, cream or yellow, brown or reddish-purple, fragrant; tube 7–10(16) mm. long, cylindric, slender, glabrous or finely pubescent, gently curved throughout; limb (3)5.5–8 mm. in diam.; lobes 3.5–5(7) x 0.5–1.8 mm., obovate, sometimes thick with involute margins.
Annual or perennial herbs, 12–40 cm. or more tall from woody rootstock, erect; stems simple or branched, with spreading branches, erect or arcuate, terete, slightly angular, minutely bifariously pubescent.
Inflorescence of long slender spikes, (2)3.5–16(30) cm. long, not quadrangular, most flowers imbricate, but the lower frequently interrupted and arranged more laxly on spike.
Calyx (5)7–9.5( 12.5) mm. long, 5-lobed, 10-nerved, glabrous; lobes (0.6)1.25–3 mm. long, unequal, lanceolate or narrowly triangular, glabrous or ciliate.
Bracteoles 3.5–5(8) x 0.35–1 mm., linear to narrowly lanceolate, ciliate or occasionally finely pubescent.
Bracts (5.5)7.5–9 x (1.5)2–3.5 mm., lanceolate, acuminate, ciliate or finely pubescent.
Capsule 3.5–5 mm. or more long, 1.5–2 mm. broad, oblong.
