Characteristics

Leaves 25–30 x 2–8 mm., ± opposite, linear to linear-lanceolate above, obovate-lanceolate to subspathulate below, entire or more usually shallowly remotely dentate, acute, tapered at base, 1-nerved, finely hispid-scabrid on both surfaces.

Corolla violet, purple or white; tube 9–10 mm. long, cylindrical, widening slightly at mouth, slightly curving, glabrous without, throat slightly pilose within; limb about 11.5 mm. in diam.; lobes c. 7 x 4.5 mm., obovate, subequal.
Annual herb 35–55 cm. tall, erect, simple or branched; stems terete, soft appressed fine white pilose; branches (where present) ± opposite, erect-spreading.
Calyx 6–9 mm. long, fine appressed, antrorse, short pilose, slightly recurved, 5-lobed, 10-nerved; lobes 1.5–2 mm. long, subulate to narrowly lanceolate.
Inflorescences of widely interrupted spikes 5–17 cm. long, with flowers 1.5–3 cm. distant when ripening, mostly alternate or ± opposite.
Bracteoles 2.75–3 x 0.4–0.6 mm., linear-lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, long white ciliate.
Bracts 3–4 x 1–1.5 mm., ovate-lanceolate, white pilose-hispid, long white ciliate.
Capsule 4.5–7.5 x 1.5–1.8 mm., oblong, obtuse; old style partly persistent.
