Characteristics

Leaves opposite or occasionally alternate; upper 27–35(50) x 3–4(8) mm., linear-oblong to linear, obtuse or acute, shortly hispid-scabrid to scabrid, 1-nerved; lower leaves 20–75 x 4–12(25) mm., elliptic, oblong or obovate, 1–3-nerved, entire to crenate, indumentum as for upper.

Annual or perennial herbs, 40–50 cm. tall, erect; stems simple or branched from middle or above, terete, subglabrous to minutely, finely appressed, antrorse hispid-pubescent, sometimes scabrid.
Inflorescence of long, slender, laxly-flowered spikes 7–25 cm. long; flowers shortly pedicellate on pedicels 0.5–1 mm. long, almost opposite above, alternate below.
Calyx 4.5–6.5 mm. long, 5-lobed, 10-nerved, sparsely short hispid-strigose on nerves and lobes; lobes 1–1.5 mm. long, narrowly-to linear-triangular, acute.
Corolla pink, purplish-blue to white; tube 5.5–6.5 mm. long, glabrous; limb up to 5.5 mm. in diam.; 1.5–3 x 0.5–2 mm., obovate.
Bracts 2.5–3 x c. 1 mm., ovate to ovate-lanceolate, concave, acute to acuminate, sparsely hairy to glabrous except on margin.
Bracteoles 1.5–3 x 0.3–0.75 mm., linear to linear-lanceolate, indumentum as for bracts.
Capsule 4.5–6 x 1.75 mm., broad, narrowly oblong in outline, shortly apiculate.
