Characteristics

Corolla white or occasionally lavender, with a mauve or bluish tube, frequently with lobes bordered with mauve or blue, fragrant; tube 4–5(6) mm. long, rather wide, funnel-shaped, straight, glabrous without except for few hairs immediately below sinuses, throat densely pilose with purplish hairs spreading well onto limb; limb 3–4 mm. in diam.; lobes c. 1.5(3) x 1–1.8 mm., obovate.

Leaves 18–50(90) x 2–10(30) mm., opposite or subopposite, lanceolate, acute narrowed at base to broadly ovate-elliptic, obtuse, entire with one to two obscure shallow lobes or toothed, 3–5-nerved, more or less appressed pilose-scabrid above, hispid-scabrid beneath, especially on nerves.
Perennial, up to 150 cm. tall, erect, rigid; stems branched usually in upper part or occasionally simple, branches spreading, hispid-scabrid-pilose with white ascending hairs.
Inflorescence of densely flowered, irregular, sessile or shortly pedunculate, axillary compound heads up to 40 x 25 mm., individual flowers not becoming lax when fruiting.
Calyx 3.75–4.5 mm. long, sparsely pubescent, 5-lobed; lobes 0.8–1.5 mm. long, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, ciliate.
Bracts 3–4 x 2–2.5 mm. or more wide, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, keeled, subglabrous, ciliate.
Bracteoles 1.75–3.75 x 0.5–1.5 mm., narrowly lanceolate, keeled, ciliate.
Capsule 2.5–3 x c. 2 mm., broadly ovoid-globular.
