Characteristics

Leaves 6–20(25) x 0.5–3(4.5) mm., opposite, oblong or oblong-lanceolate, entire, acute, appressed hirsute above, short hispid scabrid on midrib and margins of lower surface, 1-nerved.

Corolla blue to mauve or purple; tube 4.5–5 mm. long, pubescent without; limb 2.25–4 mm. in diam.; lobes c. 1.5 x 1–1.2 mm., circular-elliptic, entire or slightly emarginate.
Annual herb, 20–45(65) cm. tall, erect; stems slender, simple or rarely branched, glabrous throughout except for small area near base where sparsely patent hirsute.
Spikes 5–15(25) mm. long, cylindrical to subcapitate, compact, occasionally somewhat quadrangular at fruiting stage, not becoming especially lax when fruiting.
Bracts 2.5–3.5 x 2–3 mm., obtriangular, abruptly cuspidate (cusp 0.8–1.4 mm. long, acute), glabrous to subglabrous, ciliate, somewhat concave.
Calyx 2.25–3 mm. long, 4-lobed with sinus 1.5–2.5 mm. deep; lobes 1.25–1.5 mm. long, narrowly lanceolate, acute, ciliate.
Bracteoles 2–3 x 0.25–0.7 mm., lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, ciliate.
Capsule 2.3–2.8 x 1.5–2 mm., subsphericalovoid, beak c. 0.2 mm. long.
