Characteristics

Leaves: cauline opposite or nearly so above, internodes of ten up to 5.5 cm. long, 10–35 x 1–3.5 mm., narrowly linear to linear-lanceolate below, entire or rarely with 1 or 2 blunt teeth below, 1-nerved, hispid-scabrid; basal leaves (18)25 x 8.5(12) mm., ovate, obtuse, 3-nerved, entire to sinuate-dentate or sinuate, hispid-scabrid.

Corolla blue to violet or purple; tube c. 5.5–6.5 mm. long, subcylindrical, strict, pilose without, throat pilose; limb 2.5–4.5 mm. in diam.; lobes 1–1.5(2.5) x 0.25–0.75(1) mm., oblong to obovate-oblong, sometimes involute on drying.
Bracts: upper 2.5–3 x 1–1.25 mm., lanceolate, hispid-scabrid; lower up to 6.5 x 1 mm., involute, linear to linear-lanceolate, hispid-scabrid.
Calyx 4.5–4.8(5.5) mm. long, hispid, 5-lobed, 10-nerved; lobes 1–1.2(1.5) mm. long, narrowly lanceolate to subulate, subequal.
Spikes 8–10 x 5–7 mm., densely flowered, elongating to 50(75) mm. long with lower flowers becoming more remote at fruiting.
Annual herbs, 12–27 cm. tall, erect; stems simple, slender, quadrangular, patent-hispid to pilose or subglabrous.
Capsule 3.8–4 x 2–2.8 mm., ellipsoid to ovoid-ellipsoid, truncate to broadly rounded.
Bracteoles 1.25–1.5 mm. long, linear.
