Characteristics

Annual herb, 20–68 cm. tall, erect; sterns simple or more rarely branched, quadrangular, glabrous or occasionally shortly pubescent immediately below insertion of leaves, glabrous or scabrid on prominent angles.

Bracts 3.5–5 x 2.5–3 mm., broadly ovate to elliptic-rhombic, acuminate, at times somewhat trilobed towards base with lobes or margins dark coloured as with midrib, glabrous or minutely granular-glandular.
Corolla blue to mauve or purple or white; tube (4)7–8 mm. long, glabrous or glandular, throat pilose; limb 4–6 mm. in diam.; lobes 1.5–2.5 mm. wide, upper lobes elliptic-obovate, lower lobes oblong.
Calyx 4–5 mm. long, 4-lobed, deeply divided on lower side, glabrous to subglabrous; lobes 3–4 mm. long, subulate-lanceolate, glabrous except for a few small hairs on margins.
Leaves (2.5)5–14 x 0.75–1 mm., sparse, alternate or opposite, subulate or linear, sparsely, minutely scabrid to glabrous, entire, 1-nerved.
Bracteoles 3–4 mm. long, linear-lanceolate, shallowly carinate, glabrous to finely glandular.
Spikes (4)10–27 x 4–5 mm., broad, densely compacted, quadrangular.
Capsule 2.5 x 1.5 mm., broadly ellipsoid, glabrous.
