Characteristics

Upper cauline leaves 9–50 x 3–7 mm., opposite, narrowly linear, obtuse, entire, densely long white-hispid with callous-based patent or antrorse hairs, 1-nerved; middle and lower cauline leaves up to 70 x 12 mm., narrowly linear-obovate, obtuse, entire or rarely coarsely dentate with one or two teeth on each margin, densely hispid, 3-nerved; basal leaves where present, up to 35 x 15 mm., ovate to obovate-oblong, obtuse, entire to coarsely dentate, hispid.

Corolla light blue, through dark blue to mauve and purple, occasionally white; tube (5.5)7–8 mm. long, slender, pilose without, throat densely pilose, limb 2.25–3(6) mm. in diam.; lobes obovate-oblong, obtuse, subequal.
Calyx 4–6 mm. long, white hispid-strigose, obscurely 10-nerved, 5-lobed, frequently with 4 lobes subequal, c. 1.6 mm. long, with fifth lobe much smaller, c. 0.8–1 mm. long, narrower; all lobes narrowly lanceolate.
Spikes 5–38 x 5–12 mm., terminal or lateral, densely compacted except occasionally lower flowers becoming more remote during fruiting.
Annual herb, 10–75 cm. tall, erect; stems slender, simple or more usually branched especially above, pilose-hispid.
Bracts 4–6.5 x 1.5–2.5(3) mm., ovate-lanceolate, hispid-scabrid, long white hispid usually on margins.
Bracteoles 2–4 x c. 0.5–0.7 mm., subulate, white hispid-scabrid.
Capsule 3.5–4.5 x 2–2.4 mm., ovoid, glabrous.
