Characteristics

Leaves: cauline 18–40 x 2.5–5 mm., opposite or subopposite, lanceolate, acute or obtuse, entire, somewhat densely longpilose to hispid-pilose above, more sparsely so beneath; basal leaves 25–30 x 8–12 mm., elliptic to oblong, obtuse, entire to sparsely dentate, 3–5-nerved, scabrid above, pilose beneath mainly on nerves.

Corolla blue to purple, or white; tube c. 5 mm. long, pubescent without above; limb 1.6–2.25 mm. in diam.; lobes 1–1.3 x c. 1 mm., obovate to circular, margins slightly involute or crenate when dry.
Calyx 4–4.5 mm. long, 5-lobed, 10-nerved, densely long, soft pilose; lobes 0.6–1.25 mm. long, lanceolate, uneven, frequently with one lobe very much shorter.
Bracts 3–5.5 mm. long, up to 1.75 mm. wide, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, upper at least with the apices bi or trifid, hispid to hispid-scabrid.
Annual herbs, (10)30–65 cm. tall, erect; stems simple or occasionally branched above, patent to retrorse hispid-pilose.
Spikes 10–26(30) mm. long, quadrangular, terminal or lateral, with flowers dense, compact.
Capsule 4.5–5 x 2 mm., cylindric-ovoid.
Bracteoles absent.
