Characteristics

Leaves opposite to nearly opposite, (10)30–60 x (1)3–8.5(15) mm., lanceolate or oblanceolate, narrowed into petiole-like base, acute to obtuse at apex often with small apiculus present, entire, appressed white hispid-strigose on both surfaces, 1–3-nerved, frequently with tuft of small hairs in axils.

Perennial woody herb or undershrub, 60–200 cm. or more tall, erect; stems rigid, branched, terete, more often glabrous above, becoming bifariously hispid-scabrid-pubescent below, occasionally glabrescent leaving only thickened scabrid bases of hairs; branches opposite to subopposite, spreading.
Calyx 7.5–12 mm. long slightly curved, glabrous without or with few stiff hairs on nerves, 5-lobed, 10-nerved; lobes 2–4 mm. long, c. 1 mm. wide, ovate-lanceolate, shortly acuminate, short-ciliate, spreading after anthesis.
Corolla white; tube 12–18 mm. long, cylindrical, widening somewhat above, straight or slightly curved, glabrous without, pilose at throat; limb 18–30 mm. in diam.; lobes 8–14 x 6–12.5 mm., subcircular.
Inflorescence of long interrupted spikes or racemes up to 30 cm. or more long; flowers opposite, subsessile or with pedicels up to 3 mm. long.
Bracts 3.5–6(10) x 1.2–1.5 mm., ovate-fanceolate, shortly acuminate, sparsely hairy on upper surface, shortly ciliate.
Capsule 6.5–9 x 2.5–3.8 mm., ellipsoid to cylindrical, narrower above, slightly curved, shortly apiculate.
Bracteoles 2.5–5 x 0.5–0.7 mm., linear-lanceolate.
