Calyx 2.8–3.25 mm. long, 4-lobed with pronounced sinus c. 1.75 mm. deep, bearing a minute fifth lobe or denticle c. 0.1 mm. long at base; lobes 0.6–0.8 mm. long, broadly deltoid to lanceolate, minutely hispid-ciliate.
Annual herb, 9–20(55) cm. tall, erect; stems usually simple but sometimes sparingly branched, very slender, glabrous or with very few minute stiff hairs, very scattered.
Leaves 4.5–16 x 0.5–1.5(2) mm., opposite, linear, entire, acute or subobtuse, scabrid, occasionally with few minute stiff hairs on margins and midrib, 1-nerved.
Bracts 2–2.8 x 2–2.6 mm., broadly ovate to subcircular, shortly apiculate, margin whitish, shortly ciliate.
Spikes 5–35 mm. long, up to 6 mm. broad, compact becoming slightly laxer at maturity.
Bracteoles 1.25–2 x 0.5–0.75 mm., oblong-lanceolate, acute, white margined, ciliate.
