Characteristics

Leaves: cauline in 1–3 pairs, opposite or nearly opposite, somewhat appressed to stem, 3–8 x c. 1 mm., lanceolate to narrowly ovate-lanceolate, glabrous or shortly hirsute on slightly keeled midrib, ciliate; basal and lower cauline leaves 12–40 x 4–8(19) mm., obovate, obovate-oblong to oblong, glabrous to hispid on major nerves beneath, entire, 1–3-nerved with midrib occasionally pinnately divided, petiole-like base shortly hispid.

Corolla purple to deep violet; tube 7–7.5 mm. long, sparsely pubescent to subglabrous, straight, pilose at throat; limb (4)5.5–8 mm. in diam.; lobes 2.6–4 x 1–2.75 mm., irregularly uneven, obovate, rounded.
Annual herb 13–35 cm. tall, erect; stems glabrous, several arising from rootstock, simple, only very rarely branched, occasionally with a few long, patent, multicellular hairs arising at or near base.
Calyx 4–5.25 mm. long, glabrous, 5-lobed, 10-nerved; lobes 2–3 mm. long, narrowly lanceolate, equalling or longer than calyx tube, ciliate.
Inflorescence spicate with spikes 10–15 mm. long, extending to c. 30 mm. at fruiting with lower flowers becoming remote.
Bracts 2.8–4 x 2 mm., ovate, short acuminate; glabrous, ciliate.
Bracteoles 2.8–3.5 x 1.2–1.8 mm., linear-lanceolate, ciliate.
Capsule c. 6 mm. long, 2.5–3 mm. broad, ovoid, subtruncate.
