Characteristics

Climbing or scrambling shrub, 1–3 m. or more tall or long.. Young twigs rather appressed-white-pubescent.. Leaves petiolate; blade elliptic or lanceolate, 2.1–8.5 cm. long, 1–4.2 cm. wide, acute or slightly acuminate, generally minutely emarginate, with the midrib generally terminating in a minute mucro, rounded, slightly cordate at the base, glabrous; petiole 3–8 mm. long.. Flowers solitary in the upper leaf-axils; pedicels 8–20 mm. long, appressed-pubescent.. Sepals of two kinds; outer pair 1–2.5 cm. long, green, appressed-brownish-pubescent without, densely pubescent within, enclosing the bud; inner pair petaloid, oblong-obovate, 2–3 cm. long, whitish or greenish, pubescent without, glabrescent or glabrous within.. Petals white or pale green, like the petaloid sepals.. Stamens many, 2.5–4 cm. long.. Gynophore 1–3 cm. long.. Fruits ellipsoid, up to 5 cm. long, 3 cm. in diameter, ribbed, red.
