Characteristics

Tree to 10 m high, hairy with simple, erect hairs. Thorns curved, 3–4 mm long or absent. Leaves elliptic to ovate, obtuse, 6.5–12 cm long, 2–4 cm wide; base acute; midrib slightly sunken towards base; veins 5–7 pairs; petiole 5–20 mm long, densely hairy beneath. Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils or in terminal subumbels. Sepals 14–22 mm long, the outer pair puberulous, ribbed; inner pair glabrous or hairy in median region. Petals 20–40 mm long, hairy at base. Stamens c. 90. Gynophore 4.7–9 cm long; ovary ovoid, c. 5 mm long, glabrous or densely hairy. Fruit globose, umbonate, c. 5 cm diam.; pericarp wrinkled. Seeds not known.

The flowers are 7-8 cm across. They are white with pink stamens. The fruit is a berry 4-5 cm across. It is round and wrinkled. The fruit pulp is edible.
