Slender, tufted annual, 100-250(-450) mm high. Leaf blade 30-150 x 1.0-2.0 (-3.5) mm; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence a narrow panicle, 50-100 mm long, branches stiff, alternate, ± secund, bearing 2-5 spikelets; pedicels trigonous. Spikelets 5-7(-10) mm long, laterally compressed, awnless; glumes ± equal, shorter than spikelet; lower glume 1-3-nerved; upper glume 3-5-nerved. Florets 6-10, widely spaced on a fragile rachilla; lemma entire, rounded on back at least at base; anther 0.3-0.5 mm long. Flowering time Oct.-Dec.
Culms 5–34 cm high. Leaf blades flat, 3–15 (–27) cm long, 1.7–4.7 mm wide, with scabrous margins, acuminate, adaxially scabrous on veins, abaxially scabrous in upper half. Inflorescences ovate to elliptic, 2.3–10 cm long; peduncles glabrous, occasionally pigmented. Spikelets 3.8–10.2 mm long; bisexual florets free at tip. Glumes: lower glume 1.7–2.1 mm long, 1 (–3)-nerved; upper glume 1.3–2.2 mm long, 1 or 3-nerved, with midnerve scaberulous. Basal lemma 1.8–3 mm long. Palea similar in texture to lemma. Caryopsis 0.4–0.5 mm wide.
