Characteristics

Annuals, caespitose or culms solitary, bisexual. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Inflorescence a raceme or few-branched panicle, rigid, spike-like. Spikelets secundly arranged, biseriate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes and between florets, with (3–) 4–11 (–12) bisexual florets; pedicel short, thick; rachilla extension with incomplete florets. Glumes 2, lateral to rachis, ±equal, shorter than adjacent lemma, pointed, awnless, keeled; lower glume 1–3-nerved; upper glume 1, 3 or 5-nerved. Lemmas blunt, awnless, dorsally rounded, 5-nerved Palea 2-keeled. Lodicules membranous, glabrous. Stamens 3. Caryopsis free from both lemma and palea, ellipsoid, with a shallow longitudinal groove ventrally; hilum short; embryo small; endosperm hard.
