Characteristics

Only the staminate plant known, nearly 1 m. high. Leaves many, erect, to 23 cm. long, more or less cretaceous toward base, the margins not contrasting with the rest of the leaf; sheaths longer than the blades but scarcely distinct; blades broadly ligulate, 4 cm. wide, broadly acute, apiculate, sparsely punctulate-lepidote above and densely beneath. Scape erect, slender. Scape-bracts subfoliaceous, densely imbricate. Inflorescence lax, amply tripinnate. Primary bracts suboblong, broadly acute, much shorter than the branches. Branches divergent, 2 dm. long. Spikes elongate, lax, many-flowered. Floral bracts broadly ovate, shorter than the sepals.-Staminate flowers sessile, spreading. Sepals asym-metric, broadly obovate, 2 mm. long. Petals 3.5 mm. long, white. Stamens unequal.
