Genus

Angiosperms > Poales > Bromeliaceae

Characteristics

Acaulescent herbs. Leaves densely rosulate, minutely appressed-lepidote, often cretaceous-coated, green; sheaths large but indistinct. Inflorescence usually bipinnate, rarely simple, exceeding the leaves, its branches polystichously flowered. Flowers small or minute, sessile, perfect or dimorphic and functionally dioecious at least as to the staminate plants. Sepals free, usually rounded and strongly asymmetric with the right side produced; petals free, naked, mostly with very short blades; stamens included, anthers ovate or elliptic; ovary superior, broadly ovoid or ellipsoid, style short or none; ovules few to several, apically long-connate, a small basal coma of agglutinated hairs appearing as a spur on the funicle. Capsule ovoid, septicidal; seeds with coma apical and folded over.
More
Stemless herbs. Leaves densely utriculate-rosulate, entire, minutely appressed-lepidote, green, the sheath large. Scape conspicuous. Inflorescence usually bi-pinnate, rarely simple or tripinnate, exceeding the leaves, its branches polystichous-flowering. Flowers small or minute, usually sessile or nearly so, perfect or-func-tionally dioecious. Sepals free, usually rounded and asymmetric, glabrous. Petals free, naked. Stamens included, unequal so far as known, anthers ovate or elliptic. Ovary superior, broadly ovoid or ellipsoid; style shorter than the ovary or wanting; ovules few to several, long-caudate. Capsule septicidal. Seeds with coma apical and folded over, their bases projecting from the capsule.
Herbs, epiphytic, without evident stems. Leaves many-ranked, rosulate; blade linear to triangular, base usually with chalklike bloom, margins entire, appressed-scaly. Inflorescence central, 5--many-flowered, always many-ranked, simple or compound, flowers laxly arranged; floral bracts small, inconspicuous, not obscuring rachis. Flowers bisexual in flora or functionally unisexual; sepals distinct, strongly asymmetric; petals distinct; stamens included, usually in 2 unequal sets, filaments free; ovary superior. Capsules ovoid to ellipsoid, dehiscent. Seeds with light tan to brown, apical, plumose appendage.
