Characteristics

Perennial herb; latex clear. Rootstock a cluster of white tubers. Stems twining, slightly succulent, deciduous. Leaves with petioles 25–40 mm long; lamina ovate-elliptic, 20–130 mm long, 15–70 mm wide, rounded to cordate at base, acute; colleters 4. Inflorescence 1–20-flowered; peduncle to 100 mm long. Flowers 22–33 mm long, 6–15 mm wide; pedicels 15–22 mm long. Sepals linear-lanceolate, 3–3.5 mm long. Corolla a mixture of cream, purple-red and purple-black blotches; tube 12–20 mm long, slightly inflated at base; lobes 7–11 mm long, connate near tips, replicate where margins free. Interstaminal corona forming 5 cupular pockets around staminal column. Follicles to 21 cm long.

Environment

It is a tropical plant. It does best in humus rich, moist, well drained soil. It suits a sheltered, warm, sunny position. It is drought and frost tender. Near Townsville in Australia it grows from sea level to 700 m altitude.
