Slender climbers, often at least partially succulent, sometimes geophytic herbs. Rootstock of fleshy, fusiform tubers. Leaves petiolate, fleshy; colleters present. Inflorescence of 1–several umbelliform cymes. Corolla funnel-shaped; tube mostly longer than or equalling lobes, ±inflated at base; lobes free at tips, valvate. Annular and corolline coronas absent; gynostegial corona both staminal and interstaminal; staminal of 5 lobes, incumbent on backs of anthers and connivent above style-head; interstaminal usually cupular, 5-lobed, variously shaped, often bifid and appearing 10-lobed, usually partially fused to staminal corona lobes. Stamens connate into gynostegium, not markedly capitate. Anthers 2-locular; lacking terminal appendage; pollen in linear tetrads; pollinaria with 2, subquadrate, ±erect pollinia with pellucid germinating mouth on inner margin; corpusculum ovate; caudicles winged, not geniculate. Style-head depressed-globose. Follicles fusiform. Seeds flattened, oblong, comose at micropylar end.
